Macadamia nuts are always known as one of the nutritious nuts with high value, delicious taste and are “superfoods” chosen by many users. And when there is a need to use or trade macadamia nuts, in addition to product quality, price is also a factor that many customers are interested in.
1. Selling price of fresh macadamia nuts that have just been picked and still have the green shell
Fresh macadamia nuts in Vietnam range from 70,000 – 90,000 VND/kg, depending on market fluctuations. In addition, the price of fresh macadamia nuts also depends on the purchasing warehouse, product quality, origin, etc.
Currently, fresh macadamia nuts in the Central Highlands provinces have much better prices than in other localities. The reason is that there is a large and abundant source of raw materials here, and in particular, the quality of Central Highlands macadamia nuts is considered the best in Vietnam.
2. Price of dried macadamia nuts
Dried products have gone through the screening and processing stages, so they are much more expensive than fresh macadamia nuts. In particular, imported macadamia nuts have to bear many costs of transportation, preservation, taxes, etc., so the price is quite high, from 430,000 – 480,000 VND/kg. Vietnamese dried macadamia nuts cost from 320,000 – 380,000 VND/kg. However, Vietnamese macadamia nuts are more highly appreciated for their quality thanks to being produced locally, with a short storage time, ensuring that the goods are always fresh.
In addition, there are some high-quality imported macadamia nuts such as Australian macadamia nuts, which cost up to 560,000 VND/kg. Australia is considered the cradle of macadamia nuts and the quality of the products here is always the measure for macadamia nuts worldwide.

Factors determining macadamia prices
1. Origin
Each product will have a different origin and macadamia harvested in each country and each locality will have a different price. In the Vietnamese market, macadamia has extremely diverse origins such as Central Highlands macadamia, Australian macadamia, South Africa, China, etc.
Of which, Australian macadamia is always the product with the highest price due to its flavor, quality and reputable brand. In addition, Vietnamese macadamia is also highly appreciated for its quality and has a more suitable price. Macadamia products imported from China are of quite poor quality, so the price is much cheaper than other sources.
2. Season
During the main harvest season, the selling price of macadamia nuts will be much better than in the off-season or in years with poor harvests. Normally, the price of Vietnamese macadamia nuts will be greatly affected by this factor. With imported products, the seasonal factor still affects the price but there is not a big difference because there is a common price range and most of them have been signed in advance.
3. Size
Macadamia nuts on the market today are 23 – 30mm in size. Each size will have different quality and price. With a large size, macadamia nuts will be tastier, have better nutritional value and of course the price will be higher than other types.
4. Supplier
The selling price of macadamia nuts is determined by the brand that produces, imports and supplies them. For units that can produce or import directly, the price will be softer than those that buy and resell.
5. Packaging specifications
Currently, there are many different ways to package macadamia nuts such as plastic boxes, paper boxes, vacuum zip bags, etc. With canned products, macadamia nuts will be preserved more safely and for a longer time. However, the price difference is not too high, only from 5,000 – 7,000 VND for a product. Therefore, we recommend that you use canned products, which can be used for a long time and also enhance aesthetics, suitable for giving as gifts.
6. Purchase quantity
Depending on the needs, customers can choose to buy retail or wholesale from the supplier. With the need to buy macadamia nuts in large quantities, you will receive many price incentives as well as the best policies for customers.

The value of macadamia tree
Since the discovery of the macadamia tree, people have paid special attention to this fruit. Macadamia has a very high value in use. It is a dry fruit whose kernels contain a lot of nutrients. In the kernel, the oil content accounts for up to 78% (higher than in peanuts, almonds and pecans). In that oil, up to 87% is unsaturated fatty acid – a valuable compound for human health, it reduces cholesterol levels and prevents and treats arteriosclerosis.
The amount of protein in the seed accounts for 9.2% with 20 types of amino acids (of which 8 types of amino acids are essential for humans). In addition, it also has a lot of starch, minerals and many types of vitamins. Therefore, people have likened it to the “queen of dried fruits”!
In particular, the macadamia kernel is very delicious, with a buttery, rich, and creamy flavor. It is also processed to make cakes, candy, cooking oil, drinks, skin care oil, medicinal oil. In recent years, during Tet, macadamia products are ranked as the most attractive product, often not enough for customers…
The outer shell of the macadamia nut (green shell) contains a lot of tannin and protein. We can use it to make animal feed or medicine for tanning leather. The shell is very hard, it can be used as activated carbon, as fuel or crushed into a substrate for growing seedlings. With many outstanding characteristics as above, macadamia has become a new and attractive crop. People everywhere are eager to grow it. It is not only a crop that helps people to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty but also helps people to quickly become rich.

The development of macadamia trees in the world
The global macadamia growing area began to grow rapidly since the 1990s. According to statistics from the Macadamia Association of countries, by 2020, the world’s macadamia growing area reached about 450,000 hectares. Of which, the largest is China with an area of about 200,000 hectares, followed by South Africa with an area of more than 50,000 hectares, Australia with more than 30,000 hectares… Vietnam is currently ranked about 5th in the world with an area of about more than 20,000 hectares.
In China, the macadamia growing area by the end of 2020 reached about 200,000 hectares, concentrated in Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Guizhou, and Sichuan. Of which, the two largest growing areas are in Lincang – Yunnan (~180,000 hectares) and Guangxi (~33,000 hectares). Macadamia has been grown in Lincang since 1991, by the end of 2020 the macadamia growing area reached ~180,000 hectares, accounting for 88% of the growing area in Yunnan, 81% of the growing area in China, and more than 52% of the world’s macadamia growing area.

The average yield of macadamia nuts in mature orchards is 2.5 – 3 tons of nuts/ha. The total global macadamia nut output in 2020 was about 230,000 tons of dry nuts (International Nut and Dried Fruit Council – INC, 2020). South Africa is at the top with more than 48,000 tons of dry nuts (moisture content about 10%), followed by Australia with nearly 47,000 tons, Kenya with about 37,000 tons.
The macadamia nut processing industry in the world is growing rapidly and widely. In the past 10 years, up to 2020, the supply of macadamia nuts has doubled with an output of about 230,000 tons of dry nuts. Australia and South Africa are currently the world’s leading suppliers of macadamia nuts, both accounting for 25% of the total global output.

The macadamia industry accounts for only about 2% of the world’s dry nut consumption. According to forecasts, the world’s demand for macadamia nuts will continue to grow at a high rate in the coming time. The potential for market expansion is still very large. It is forecasted that by 2030, the global supply of macadamia nuts will only meet about 50% of market demand (INC, 2020).
In 2020, the global macadamia nut market size reached USD 1.43 billion and is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 9.2% during 2020-2030. The use of dried macadamia nuts in regular diets is increasing worldwide, driving the market growth. In addition, the trend of using organic macadamia products is also expected to increase in the near future.

The organic macadamia segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.2% from 2020 to 2030. The growing popularity of organic foods is the main reason for this growth. Organic macadamia nuts are healthier than conventional products as they are free from pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
At the same time, along with the rapid and strong development of the macadamia industry, macadamia growing and producing countries have been focusing on research on breeding techniques, cultivation techniques, pest and disease control as well as general orientation on macadamia product quality standards and macadamia nut consumption markets worldwide. In September 2021, the World Macadamia Association (WMO) was established with 7 founding countries (including Vietnam) with the goal of promoting and boosting the demand for macadamia products worldwide.

In the coming time, WMO will focus on 3 main consumer market segments: China, India and customers using plant-based diets. This is also the organization that will build and monitor the quality standards of macadamia products for dissemination and general application worldwide.
In addition, the International Macadamia Scientific Research and Development Committee (IMSC), a specialized organization for applied scientific research on macadamia planting and care techniques, is also being promoted to be established in Lincang, Yunnan, China.
